The History of the Sunderland Hangar

The Sunderland Hangar at Catalina Bay holds a special place in the history of Hobsonville Point.  Built in 1927, it housed the Sunderland seaplanes which were initially used for commercial flights.  During the Second World War, they were reassigned and provided air and rescue support in the Pacific.  The RNZAF continued to use the Sunderland Hangar until the area was designated for special development and was subsequently purchased by Willis Bond in 2016.

Willis Bond was determined to retain the special building and their redevelopment of the space resulted in the Little Creatures Brewery and The Hangar Office Space opening in 2019.  The redeveloped Sunderland Hangar forms the centrepiece of Willis Bond Catalina Bay masterplan which will include over 80 apartments and other commercial and retail space.

The purpose-built design of The Hangar captures light and open spaces that inspire creativity and calm in this desirable waterfront location.
